Federal Student Aid Funding

Federal Student Aid Funding

Tags: Action Alert

During this fall semester, we have reached a turning point for federal student aid funding. Because of our nation's historic economic downturn, we've already seen $30 billion cut from critical student aid programs. According to the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), for the Pell Grant alone, New York funding in 2012-13 is $2.5 billion, more than 548,000 recipients, and an average award of $4,682 per student.

Within the federal government, a Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction has been formed (also known as the Super Committee) and has until this November 23 to come up with a plan to reduce the national funding deficit. With this plan, federal student aid could very well be on the chopping block.

As the Committee's deadline nears, we need your help to make sure that lawmakers do not balance the budget on the backs of students. We hope you will sign the statement of support organized by the Student Aid Alliance sharing your belief that student aid funding must be preserved.
